“Reality to an individual with Autism is confusing. Autism has no physical presentation. Because they look like any other child, others assume they are naughty or the parents are not instilling discipline on the child.” - Patrick Speech and Language Centre
Children develop differently but early detection and treatment considerably improves outcomes. The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends that paediatricians screen children for autism at 18 months of age. As a parent, monitoring your childs development and knowing the early signs of autism can really make a difference in your child life.
Certain mile stones and “red flags” may help detect the risk for an autism spectrum disorder. such as:
“no big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter
no back-and forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months
no babbling by 12-months
no back and forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months
no words by 16 months
no meaningful, two word phrases(not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months
any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age”
If the child exhibits any of the above, please don't delay in asking your paediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation.
