I remember one occasion when I had about 6 double shot vanilla lattes in under 6 hours. BAD IDEA. I could feel my heart through my shirt.
So how much coffee is okay to have in a day?
According to the Mayo Clinic, up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. Thats about 4 cups of brewed coffee a day. But you have to remember, its not just coffee that contains caffeine, cola drinks or energy boosting drinks may contain caffeine and the caffeine content in beverages varies widely.
So what happens when you take too much?
If you manage to get a bit too much caffeine in your system, like any other substance you put into your system, there is a risk of adverse effects, such as:
• Migraine headaches
• Frequent urination or inability to control urination
• Stomach upset
• Fast heartbeat
• Muscle tremors
It’s not so easy to “overdose” on coffee but having a large volume of coffee within a short period of time may lead to side effects. However, technically the generally accepted lethal dose of caffeine is 10g a day, which is about 100 cups of coffee( We do not recommend you try to achieve this).
Note that some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others. The experienced coffee drinker that I am now can probably handle more than the average Nigerian. Other factors that may affect your sensitivity to coffee include, genetics, body mass, age, medication use and health conditions, such as anxiety disorders.
Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant and those who are breastfeeding should speak to their doctors about limiting their caffeine intake.
